PRAY IN THE SPIRIT
Pr. James Victor Lubwama
Prayer is an appeal of the things you need from the Lord; its dialogue between man and God; it's a way to realise the will of God (Psalm 25:4), and learning how to pray (Mathew 6:9-15) strengthens your relationship with God. Authentic prayer is communication between your heart and God

Praying in the spirit and not in one's understanding (carnal state) does not mean that you will not understand what you are saying, but implies that you will pray in unity with the Holy spirit - for your mind and heart will completely be focused on God. Be aware that God is a Spirit. John 4:24 (AMP) says;

"God is a Spirit (a spiritual Being) and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth (reality)"
Human beings are both flesh and spirit. We exist in two worlds - physical and spiritual; thus to communicate with God (God is a Spirit), we must use our spirits. A Carnal Christian can neither communicate with God nor cast out demons, which is why you need to pray with both Spirit and understanding. The bible says in 1 Corinthians 14:14-15 (AMP) that;
“For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unproductive [because it does not understand what my spirit is praying]. 15 Then what am I to do? I will pray with the spirit [by the Holy Spirit that is within me] and I will pray with the mind [using words I understand]; I will sing with the spirit [by the Holy Spirit that is within me] and I will sing with the mind [using words I understand].”
It is easy to pray physically but when your spirit is not involved. A person can be in church and home at the same time (physically at church but psychologically at home). Being in the flesh (carnality) is being so mindful of the surrounding (earthly concerns) other than entirely focusing on God. When you pray but your mind isn’t focused on what you are doing, you can’t see God!
We often ask ourselves: Why do we get attacks after being in a powerful service? It’s because sometimes we are present in flesh but absent in the spirit. We don't do things spiritually (but carnally) yet the one we communicating to is Spirit. We offer lip service instead of offering heart service - if you pray with your heart, you are covered because demons cannot do counter attacks on a person who is covered by the Anointing. Psalm 91:1 (AMP) teaches;
"He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will remain secure and rest in the shadow of the Almighty [whose power no enemy can withstand]."
Prayer is a spiritual communication between God man, and that is why it’s important and effective to pray in the spirit
