POWER OF A SONG (SPIRIT-INDUCED, SCRIPTURE-FILLED)
Pr. James Victor Lubwama
1 Samuel 16:14-23 (GNT)
“The Lord's spirit left Saul, and an evil spirit sent by the Lord tormented him. 15 His servants said to him, “We know that an evil spirit sent by God is tormenting you. 16 So give us the order, sir, and we will look for a man who knows how to play the harp. Then when the evil spirit comes on you, the man can play his harp, and you will be all right again.” 17 Saul ordered them, “Find me a man who plays well and bring him to me.” 18 One of his attendants said, “Jesse of the town of Bethlehem has a son who is a good musician. He is also a brave and handsome man, a good soldier, and an able speaker. The Lord is with him” …………....23 From then on, whenever the evil spirit sent by God came on Saul, David would get his harp and play it. The evil spirit would leave, and Saul would feel better and be all right again.”
Music is a powerful weapon, and there is a lot of power in songs. God’s desire for setting words and music to songs is evident when one reads the bible. There are about 185 songs in the bible and 150 of those are found in the book of Psalms with Psalm 119 being the longest song. (Psalm96:1, Psalm 47:6)

It is not just any song, but a song that is inspired by the Holy Spirit has the power to deliver, transform, heal and usher one into the presence of God; when you sing a scripture filled song, it refreshes your soul and repositions you to the spiritual realm - it enables one to cross from the carnal state into the spiritual realm. The devil speaks to a person who is in a carnal state while God speaks to a person who has crossed into spiritual state; however, crossing from carnality to the spiritual realm requires involvement, surrender to God and meditation on the Most High God. John 4:24 (NKJV) reminds us that;
"God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth.”

You can come to church burdened, troubled and with a frantic mind but when you surrender all and focus on God during praise and worship, you become free and regain hope hence transformation. A song becomes transformational when its inspired by the Spirit, and is scripture filled - that is a song with power to transform.
The power in an inspired scripture-filled song enables one to cross to the spiritual realm. The Holy Spirit will guide one on the song to sing in a particular moment. This is why praise and worship leaders must be spiritually mature and sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Jesus said in John 16:13-14 that:
"When He, the Spirit of Truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth [full and complete truth]. For He will not speak on His own initiative, but He will speak whatever He hears [from the Father and He will disclose to you what is to come [in the future]. 14 He will glorify and honor Me, because He (the Holy Spirit) will take from what is Mine and will disclose it to you."
God-centered singing is done toward God - in His presence and relates to Him with a desire that He is hearing and will receive it with approval and delight. So when you sing, do so with ultimate focus on your Lord and Saviour. Ephesians 5:18-19 (ESV) says;
"Be filled with the Spirit, 19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart”
Christian singing flow out of being filled with the Holy Spirit; this implies that it is not ordinary, but supernatural. Why? God is Spirit and we must be in spirit to praise and worship him (Psalm 139:7-12). There is religious singing that is not the work of the Holy Spirit, not scripture filled and its unpleasant to the Lord. Amos 5:23-24 (ESV) warns;
”Take away from me the noise of your songs; to the melody of your harps I will not listen 24 But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream."

Corporate Christian singing (praise and worship) is an expression of the presence and fullness of the Holy Spirit, and it emanates from the heart signifying that it's authentic. The principle of true Christian praise and worship is not a mere ceremonial deed but an inner, authentic valuing of God in the heart - God values heart service more than lip service (as the scripture says; singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart ).

One of the most devotional ways to draw near God is through worship; it's centred on God and His greatness. When we worship God, we magnify, glorify and exalt Him and thus He becomes bigger in our hearts and minds, and our problems and worries vanish - in worship we allow God's greatness to encounter and transform the surrounding

You need to sing the song inspired by the Holy Spirit. When the praises go up, God's glory comes down The bible says; "God inhabit the praises of his people" - Psalms 22:3 Before you go to any battle, before you do anything, Judah (which means praise), should go ahead of you. Genesis 29:35 (MSG) narrates;
"She became pregnant a final time and had a fourth son. She said, “This time I’ll praise God. “So she named him Judah (Praise-God)……”
The bible says in Judges 20:18 (NLT)
“Before the battle the Israelites went to Bethel and asked God, “Which tribe should go first to attack the people of Benjamin?” The Lord answered, “Judah is to go first.”
In the scripture above, Bethel means a house of God (Genesis35). When they inquired from the house of God, he told them to have praise go ahead of them. The question we must ask ourselves is: When we are waging battle in the spiritual realm, who goes ahead of us? Do we enter the battle alone, or do we allow Judah, or "praise" to go first?
Praise is not an act of the flesh; it is an attitude of the heart. It takes discipline to train our spirits to send out praise as we enter battle. There is that song God has put on your heart, it bears your message. Use it as a weapon to fight evil.
There is power in a scripture-filled song!!
